Grid Dynamics, the global leader in scaling mission-critical systems, today announced it is working with Sun Microsystems and Saratov State University (SSU), to develop a new course of study in high-performance computing (HPC) at SSU, which is one of Russia’s oldest and most respected universities.
SSU was founded in 1909 and currently has more than 28,000 students. SSU’s Department of Computer Science and Information Technologies recently collaborated with Grid Dynamics to establish the School of Programming Technology. Among the new courses being developed for this school is “Parallel and Distributed Computing.” The course will teach students how to use Sun HPC Software. This will be the first in a series of courses designed to provide students with practical knowledge for working in HPC environments.
Sun(TM) HPC Software, Developer Edition for OpenSolaris(TM), was created by Sun Microsystems to help developers rapidly build and optimize parallel applications. The software includes a full-featured development environment and a pre-configured grid with a virtual HPC cluster.
In today’s competitive global marketplace, institutions of higher education are teaching students more than just abstract theories and concepts. They are striving to provide students with the practical knowledge and expertise needed to add value for prospective employers immediately. The new course in Parallel and Distributed Computing is being developed to this end, and will help SSU students gain highly sought-after skills demanded by today’s employers.
Lectures for the course will begin in the second semester of the 2009-2010 school year. The course will focus on Sun(TM) Grid Engine (SGE), which is a component of Sun HPC Software. SGE is typically used in computer farms or HPC clusters, and manages the distributed work of large quantities of separate, parallel or interactive user tasks.
