The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation provided insurance education to 279 teachers through the Insurance Education Institutes. The purpose of the program is to enable junior high and high school teachers to become more effective in teaching risk management and insurance.

The Insurance Education Institutes took place at Ball State University, Middle Tennessee State University, St. John’s University, University of Central Arkansas, University of Virginia, University of Wisconsin, and Wright State University. At an institute, teachers learn what they need to know to incorporate topics on insurance into existing courses or to develop new stand-alone risk management and insurance courses. Teachers develop lesson plans to use in the classroom, based on state standards, and share ideas and information with colleagues.

“The Wisconsin Insurance Education Institute has been a huge success for us,” said Dr. Mark Browne, professor of risk management and insurance and the Gerald D. Stephens CPCU chair of risk management and insurance at the University of Wisconsin. “The teachers greatly appreciate the knowledge and tools they acquire helping them to integrate insurance concepts into their curricula. We continue to receive positive feedback from teachers about the institute and the valuable concepts they are passing along to their students.”

The Insurance Education Institutes address the following key topics:

  •     General principles of insurance
  •     How the insurance industry operates
  •     Introduction to auto insurance and analysis of an auto policy
  •     Introduction to homeowners and renters insurance and analysis of homeowners policies
  •     Life insurance principles, policies, and provisions
  •     Accident and health insurance provisions
  •     Insurance regulation
  •     Family financial planning
  •     Insurance careers

The Insurance Education Institutes are collaborative efforts between The Griffith Foundation and universities with respected risk management and insurance programs. “We truly value our university partners,” said Grace Grant, program manager at The Griffith Foundation. “We appreciate their hard work to educate teachers about insurance literacy.”
