In this day and age, it’s not often you hear of an organization lasting this long. We think we have because of the incredibly profound effect our model has on people’s lives.

Studying and then teaching at the University of Chicago, GTI founder Dr. Thomas Gordon began forming the concepts of psychotherapy that would later earn him respect as a leader in the field of conflict resolution and leadership training.

The Gordon Model of training, including Parent Effectiveness Training (P.E.T.), Leader Effectiveness Training (L.E.T.) and Teacher Effectiveness Training (T.E.T), teaches people to create effective relationships in personal and professional settings through a time-tested set of concepts and skills. The origin of what has become to be known as the Gordon Model began as a guest-written chapter in a book published by the psychologist, Dr. Carl Rogers, about client-centered therapy.

Building on his findings and continuing his work through dissertations, Gordon wrote a book entitled “Group-Centered Leadership” which was published in 1955. In the early 1960’s, he applied his knowledge to parenting. The first P.E.T. class was held in 1962 and Gordon Training International was born.

Application of these principles in the workplace, the family and in schools earned Gordon three nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Psychological Foundation. He passed away in 2002.

Current C.E.O., Linda Adams, was Dr. Gordon’s wife and partner for 35 years. She wrote a book applying the Gordon Model concepts to women entitled, “Effectiveness Training for Women” in 1979. Ten years later, she revised it to include men as well. Ms. Adams was nominated for the 2010 San Diego Business Journal’s “Women Who Mean Business” award. Her personal mission is to spread the Gordon Model to as many countries as possible, in as many languages as possible. (Photo: Linda with her daughter and Vice President of GTI, Michelle Adams.)

Later this year, she and Michelle, will travel to Poland to promote P.E.T. and T.E.T. and discuss L.E.T. with a member of a royal family. Other events that GTI is working on include a free L.E.T. training session for the United Way in conjunction with Esterline Technologies of Seattle, WA and the YMCA of Port Angeles, WA, as well as an instructor training workshop in September for those who wish to teach P.E.T. In addition, there will be an international forum of L.E.T. trainers and licensees in October that will combine over 500 years of leadership training experience under one roof—a once-in-a-lifetime event.

"In this day and age, it’s not often you hear of an organization lasting this long. We think we have because of the incredibly profound effect our model has on people’s lives." - Michelle Adams, GTI Vice President

These key concepts and skills, most of which were developed by Dr. Gordon, are taught in all Gordon programs:
-Active Listening
-The 12 Roadblocks to Communication
-I-Messages
-Shifting Gears
-No-Lose Conflict Resolution
-The Behavior Window

Participants from around the world:
"As an L.E.T. participant I would say it enriched my knowledge in dealing with my family and colleagues in terms of Active Listening and owning problems. For the organization and the clients we serve, we are developing a new culture among our employees that our organization is a learning organization and a learning organization is a listening organization" - Mohammed J., NAMA Chemicals, Saudi Arabia

"Practical, empowering, and shamelessly human – L.E.T. has given me the mindset and skill-set to engage with my colleagues worldwide and at home with my own teenage daughters in ways I have never been able to before." - Leslie V., Medtronic, Minnesota

"As a H.R. Director I found the L.E.T. skills a great asset in negotiations with unions. I began to listen to their point of view without conceding my position--this was new to them when previously each side tried to out-score the other!" - Gerry B., Associate Trainer, Ireland

"L.E.T. takes small steps to enlighten the learner and develop or revisit basics skills through interactive exercises and discussion while explaining the whys and the wherefores of communication." - Lynda N., Training Coordinator, U.S. Courts for the Southern District of Texas
