For many potential small business owners, our innovative 401(k) rollover provides a strategic source of funding

Guidant Financial Group announced today that Stephan Roche has been named the company’s new Chief Executive Officer. Roche, a former executive at ShareBuilder Corp., takes the helm from company co-founder David Nilssen, who is transitioning to the position of Executive Vice President. As a board member and key shareholder, Nilssen will continue to work closely with Roche to set the vision for Guidant, the leading provider of self-directed IRA services and small business financing solutions.

Nilssen and the company’s Board passed the torch to Roche after he demonstrated a strong leadership capacity as the company’s President and Chief Operating Officer from January 2008 to January 2009.

“Stephan is the ideal person to drive our growth in 2009 and beyond,” says Nilssen. “His extensive experience in creating innovative growth strategies and providing operational management has proven to be crucial to Guidant’s success this past year. He brings a terrific balance of creativity, motivation and leadership to our business.”

In his new position, Roche will work with the Board of Directors to establish Guidant’s long-term vision and the strategic and operational leadership necessary to continue the company’s success. Roche’s first goals are to strengthen Guidant’s presence in the small-business financing market and to build out individual investor services related to the company’s market-leading self-directed IRA.

Roche says he is realistic about the challenges Guidant faces during this time, but remains optimistic about its unique ability to enable non-lender financing and investments outside the stock market.

“For many potential small business owners, our innovative 401(k) rollover provides a strategic source of funding,” Roche adds. “I am passionate about the importance of enabling individuals to invest in their own success. I look forward to working with our extraordinary team as we help Americans to discover new ways to create success, make alternative investments, and build a secure retirement.”

Roche came to Guidant in January 2008 from ShareBuilder Corporation after its acquisition by ING DIRECT in late 2007. At ShareBuilder, Roche launched the company’s 401(k) administration arm and served as General Manager of the Small Business Group and member of the company’s executive team. Before joining ShareBuilder, Roche spent more than eight years at the leading strategy consulting firm Bain & Company. In addition to being a 2006 Puget Sound Business Journal “40 under 40” honoree, Roche graduated cum laude from Princeton University and earned an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
