Tropical Storm Andrea serves as a wake-up call for those living in historically hurricane-prone areas. That’s why Gulf Coast Supply & Manufacturing, LLC, (http://www.GulfCoastSupply.com), a leading manufacturer of high-quality metal roofing and components, is offering a checklist of things to do before a storm hits.

“For years, customers across the Southeast have trusted Gulf Coast Supply as a manufacturer of premium quality metal roofing,” Sherrill said.

Andrea, the first named storm of the 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season, is a somber reminder that the time to prepare for bad weather is before it hits. That’s why Gulf Coast Supply & Manufacturing, LLC, (http://www.GulfCoastSupply.com) is offering a handy, free checklist to help those living in historically hurricane-prone regions prepare for the worst.

Gulf Coast Supply, based in Horseshoe Beach, is Florida's largest residential metal roofing manufacturer. The geographical areas the company serves include Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and the Caribbean, all of which are vulnerable to severe storms.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Tropical Storm Andrea had maximum sustained winds of 65 mph when it made landfall about 35 miles northwest of Cedar Key.

“Andrea then zipped up the East Coast on June 7 and June 8, bringing a swath of heavy rain from North Carolina to Maine,” the NWS said.

News reports indicate that 10 tornadoes touched down in the Sunshine State and significant gusts were recorded: 58 mph at the Charlotte County Airport as well as in St. Petersburg; and, 56 mph in Clearwater. In the storm’s aftermath, Florida experienced flooding, road closings, downed trees and power lines, stalled cars as well as roof damage.

According to the non-profit Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA), more than 50 million people now live along the nation’s hurricane-prone coastlines, nearly double the number since 1970.

MRA notes that “more homeowners are turning to metal roofing to protect their homes and prevent costly repairs and damages. In fact, the residential metal roofing market has doubled over the last five years.”

For many architects, contractors and homeowners, Gulf Coast Supply has been the metal roofing manufacturer of choice—and for good reason: Metal roofs are durable, attractive, long-lasting, fade-resistant and energy-efficient. In addition, the Alliance reports that metal roofs are among the top-rated when it comes to enduring extreme weather conditions.

With that in mind, here are some timely tips from “A Preparedness Guide,” which is available from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA):

“Determine safe evacuation routes inland.”

“Learn locations of official shelters.”

“Check emergency equipment, such as flashlights, generators and battery-powered equipment such as cell phones and your NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards receiver.”

“Buy food that will keep and store drinking water.”

“Buy plywood or other material to protect your home if you don’t already have it.”

“Trim trees and shrubbery so branches don’t fly into your home.”

“Clear clogged rain gutters and downspouts.”

“Decide where to move your boat.”

“Review your insurance policy.”

“Find pet-friendly hotels on your evacuation route.”

These 10 Timely Tips and other valuable information are available from NOAA in PDF format and can be downloaded at http://www.nws.NOAA.gov/os/hurricane/resources/TropicalCyclones11.pdf.

According to the Gulf Coast Supply’s Vice President Jonathan Sherrill, the company has been a leader in manufacturing quality metal roofing and components since 1996 and is a Better Business Bureau-accredited company with a perfect A+ rating.

“For years, customers across the Southeast have trusted Gulf Coast Supply as a manufacturer of premium quality metal roofing,” Sherrill said. “My dad and uncle built Gulf Coast Supply from scratch based on principles of honesty, customer appreciation, premium products and fair prices.”
