Athletes preparing for the biggest sporting challenge of their lives this summer in London will have access to free dental facilities – they know that teeth are an important barometer of the body’s overall health.

Oral health experts from Eludril and Elgydium are urging people to adopt the same vigilant approach, particularly now gum disease (gingivitis) is being linked to more serious medical conditions.

Up to 22,200 world-class athletes will be able to use the new £23 million polyclinic at the main East London venue for the games.

It will have facilities for sports medicine, imaging, physiotherapy, optometry, podiatry – and dentistry.

“Every athlete knows that taking great care of your teeth is important,” said a spokesman for the manufacturers of Eludril mouthwash and Elgydium toothpaste.

“The world’s top athletes have spent years honing their bodies for optimum performance when they compete at the games in London.

“Athletes at this level monitor all key performance indicators – and that includes the condition of their teeth, an important guide to the body’s overall health.

“Dental plaque may not initially seem important but it is a precursor to tartar and gum disease – which has been linked to more serious medical conditions,” added the Eludril and Elgydium spokesperson.

A new study from Sweden has just suggested that cancer could be added to the ever-lengthening list of serious medical conditions with links to plaque and gingivitis.

Persistent dental plaque may play a role in the development of cancer and lead to premature death, according to the new Swedish study published in the online journal BMJ Open.

The research was supported by Sweden’s Ministry of Health and Social Affairs; The Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm; The Finnish Medical Society and the Helsinki University Central Hospital.

Researchers tracked the health of 1,390 randomly selected Stockholm residents aged between 30 and 40, based on a 24-year period.

While those being studied had no obvious signs of gingivitis, they did have significant levels of plaque on the surface of their teeth.

By 2009, 2.5 per cent of the 1,390 people had died of cancer. The average age of death was 61 for the women and 60 for the men.

The women would have been expected to live around 13 years longer and the men an additional 8.5 years so their deaths could be considered premature, say the authors of the study.

It therefore pays to watch out for the early signs of gingivitis and take swift action, warn the oral health experts from Eludril and Elgydium.

Symptoms can include halitosis (bad breath) and soreness of the gums or swollen and inflamed gums.

If ignored, gingivitis can lead to a receding gum line and – in the worst cases – the loss of teeth.

So it is vital to identify receding gums as early as possible and prevent the possibility of further damage.

Oral health professionals around the world recommend chlorhexidine as the gold standard treatment for gum disease.

Both Eludril mouthwash and Elgydium toothpaste contain chlorhexidine, a proven antibacterial and antifungal ingredient with a long history of success in tackling gum disease.

Elgydium toothpaste can be used daily to help prevent gingivitis. The Elgydium range includes Anti-Plaque, Whitening, Sensitive and Decay Protection.

Eludril Mouthwash is an antibacterial and analgesic solution which can be used to manage a number of oral health problems.

Its main use is to treat and prevent dental plaque formation and gum disease (gingivitis, also known as periodontitis) by preventing the build-up of bacteria.

Eludril Mouthwash can also be used to maintain oral hygiene in situations where tooth brushing is difficult, for instance, following oral surgery or in physically or mentally handicapped patients.

Eludril can also be used as a disinfectant for the cleansing of removable dentures and in the management of common mouth ulcers and oral candidiasis infections (fungus infections).

Elgydium Anti-Plaque toothpaste is specially formulated for sensitive gums and helps to prevent dental plaque and tartar build-up, the major causes of tooth decay and gum disease.

Elgydium Whitening, Sensitive and Decay Protection are also available as part of the Elgydium range of toothpastes.
