OSHA requires Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) training if workers are exposed to any concentrations of H2S that may exceed 10 parts per million. H2S is a flammable, colorless gas that is toxic at extremely low concentrations. Oil or natural gas is considered sour if it has a high percentage of hydrogen sulfide. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that natural gas can contain up to 28 percent hydrogen sulfide gas and it may be an air pollutant near petroleum refineries and in oil and gas extraction areas. Hydrogen Sulfide is an irritant and a chemical asphyxiant and the health effects can vary based on the level and length of exposure. High concentrations can cause shock, convulsions, inability to breathe, rapid unconsciousness, coma and even death.
The SafetySkills® H2S Safety Procedures for Drilling and Production Operations course is designed to provide the learner with the skills to recognize the dangers of hydrogen sulfide and safety procedures for working around it. When the course is over, the learner should be able to recognize H2S physical and chemical properties, H2S effects on the body, recall H2S monitoring equipment information and identify H2S exposure controls. The 20 minute course features interactive components, full narration and competency test questions after each learning section of the course. Once the course is completed, the learner will be able to print a certificate of completion.
