Hampton Island Preserve , the 4,000-acre retreat located between Savannah and Sea Island, participated in the Audubon Society's Great Backyard Bird Count last month. Its resident naturalists tracked 57 species, including double-crested cormorants, egrets, osprey, pied-billed grebes, killdeer, dunlins, woodpeckers, sparrows, clapper rails, flickers and shrikes, among many others.

"Our vision for Hampton Island revolves around the concept of creating a safe haven that honors the land and our natural resources," states Ronald S. Leventhal, developer and managing member. "For years, our families have enjoyed bird watching while kayaking, hiking and touring our organic farm. Now, we will be offering dedicated birding tours to educate our members and guests about the sustainable lifestyle we have achieved."

Hampton Island Preserve is currently restoring 200-year-old rice fields which encompass the community's new Davis Love III designed signature golf course. "We hope to continue building our collection of birds through the enhancement of their natural habitats and food supply," adds Leventhal.
