Electricity production is the leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change. To help balance their environmental footprint, San Francisco garden center and home repair store Cole Hardware has announced that they will offset 100% of the electricity used by the company in 2011. They will do this by purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).

A REC purchased by Cole Hardware represents one megawatt hour (MWh) of renewable electricity generated and delivered to the power grid. This energy will displace the generation of conventional electricity throughout the power system and reduce emissions into the atmosphere. Cole Hardware uses approximately 415,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year, and so will purchase the same amount of electricity derived from 100% wind power to offset their usage.

With their commitment to renewable energy, San Francisco power tool and hardware store Cole Hardware shares their stance of sustainability to crew members, customers, and the community at large. They will offset 100% of their electricity usage with energy derived from 100% wind power by purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).

Along with offsetting their electricity usage, Cole Hardware continues to push the envelope on green business practices. They cosponsor e-waste events with Goodwill Industries, have a new "Bike to Work" cash benefit in place for their staff, and have received numerous awards, such as the United Nations Environmental Service Award, the Urban Solution’s Neighborhood Business Award, and the Bay Guardian’s Best of the Bay.

Along with their Green Business recognition from San Francisco and their expanding recycling services, they have now joined with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership, a voluntary program that supports the organizational procurement of green power.

Cole Hardware is the first green-recognized hardware store in the nation. The San Francisco home repair company offers traditional hardware products including paint, manual and power tools, electrical and plumbing supplies, housewares, garden and cleaning products, while also offering a range of services including lock and electrical repair.

“Unlike a Home Depot or Lowes, you'll find items that make a house a home,” says Cole Hardware client Ruggy J. “[There are] the nuts and bolts to secure a solid foundation, as well as accoutrements like glassware and towels, even stretching to sporting goods like basketballs and Frisbees. The staff is always super friendly, and even the most elementary of questions/concerns is answered with a smile.”
