Every time there is an elevator accident it is tragic because the incident could have been prevented. Building owners and managers should be diligent when it comes to maintaining and servicing these elevators.
New York, NY (PRWEB) January 24, 2013
An elderly man suffered critical injuries after his legs were pinned by the doors of a rising elevator in his Harlem apartment building. According to a Dec. 31 NBC New York news report, the incident occurred when the 84-year-old man was trapped between the first and second floors of the New York City Housing Authority-run building on 105th Street. The elevator started going up before the doors fully closed, the report states. Half of the man's body got caught inside the elevator and his legs were hanging out, NBC reports. The elderly man was removed from the elevator by firefighters and transported to an area hospital with critical injuries including a possible leg fracture, the report states.
Residents at the building told NBC that their elevators have had a history of problems and that they have asked for new elevators. This recent incident has proved disconcerting for the many elderly and disabled residents living there, who now fear for their safety, the article states.
"My thoughts and prayers are with the elderly victim who has been seriously injured in this elevator accident," said New York personal injury lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm. "I sincerely hope he makes a speedy recovery."
A number of elevator accidents in New York City occur due to malfunction or improper maintenance, Wilhelm says. "Every time there is an elevator accident it is tragic because the incident could have been prevented. Building owners and managers should be diligent when it comes to maintaining and servicing these elevators. They need to listen when residents complain, not remain complacent about it."
It is truly concerning to hear that the incident occurred in a Housing Authority building which houses elderly and disabled people, Wilhelm says. "It is definitely worrisome since these residents who are older or in wheelchairs do not have a choice but to use the elevator. I trust that this case is being thoroughly investigated and that we will come to learn about what caused this incident so that similar accidents can be prevented in the future."
