Jeff Harrington, owner of Harrington Moving & Storage, recently decided to implement a new educational training tool to teach his employees.
Harrington discovered while participating in the International Association of Movers 49th Annual Meeting held in Denver, Colorado, a package of six videos entitled the “Art of Packing,” which painstakingly describe to the smallest detail the act of packing and unpacking.
“The videos explain the whole scope of the business,” said Harrington. “I was pleased to see how far the videos went with instructions on overseas wrapping, labeling and loading. The videos even discuss the art of building proper bulk heads and preparing pianos for shipment.”
The videos, which take about six hours to complete, are part of Harrington’s recent change of employee qualification testing. All Harrington Moving & Storage employees must watch the videos and complete a written exam. They must answer correctly all 50 questions in order to pass the test.
If the employees pass the test, they receive a new Harrington Moving & Storage jersey, colored orange and navy blue.
“When I was in Denver I went to the opener against the Raiders, since I have always been a huge John Elway fan. I mean who could ever forget “the Drive?” For some reason the colors at the stadium really struck a chord in my mind. When I came home I had the uniforms made up, but don’t worry you won’t see my guys Tebowing on the job!” Harrington said.
The 50-question exam asks about the different types of boxes, materials used to pack various household items, order of operations, etc.
“It really goes into detail, trust me it isn’t easy,” said Robin Moore, a mover at Harrington Moving.
Moore recently passed his “Art of Packing” exam and has been initiated into the team by receiving the company jersey from Harrington. In addition to Moore, five other employees passed the exam.
“So far so good,” Harrington said. “They are learning the art.”
