After leading the world’s cleanest convoy of trucks last week in Michigan, the U.S. Army is teaming up with the National Guard to bring an advanced technology truck to Chicago that will clean the worst and most dangerous of hazardous materials situations.
On Sept. 30, two Army vehicles led a convoy of hybrid trucks during the tenth anniversary of the Hybrid Truck Users Forum. During the SAE 2010 Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress -- Oct. 5-6 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill. -- the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) is partnering with the Michigan National Guard’s Camp Grayling installation to bring a HAZMAT Material Vacuum Truck (HMVT) to the show. With an advanced filtration system specifically designed to remove wet or dry material from the air, the HMVT is capable of rapid deployment to remove hazardous materials from affected areas. This vacuum unit assists military personnel and first responders with a safe means of removing dangerous and deadly materials.
The HMVT also represents the benefits of the Army and other services reaching out to the commercial vehicle industry to identify products that can be quickly converted for military use.
“When we look at national security and disaster relief, our country needs to counteract hazardous material situations accurately and immediately,” explained Paul Skalny, director of TARDEC’s National Automotive Center. “Combining the expertise of the National Guard with the capabilities of the HMVT, we are preparing to address disasters anywhere in the country. And that knowledge and technology will go with our Soldiers anywhere in the world.”
In addition to the display, the TARDEC officials will participate in the ''Military Business Needs from the Commercial Vehicle Industry Panel'' on Oct. 5 from 4:45 - 6:15 p.m. This panel aims to identify and discuss what is needed to better align the needs of the military branches with ground-based vehicles and mobile equipment with the design and development activities of the commercial vehicle industry. Panelists will give a brief overview of their ideal requirements and provide direction to the audience on areas where industry should focus to better support military and defense expectations and design requirements. This marks the first year in the conference's history that an Executive Panel has exclusively addressed the needs of mobile defense ground systems.
