The Nursing Image Awards recognize nurses and nurse leaders who have helped elevate the image of nursing through exceptional leadership, teamwork, or clinical accomplishments. The awards celebrate an image of nursing excellence upheld by commitments to improving patient care, quality outcomes, nurse satisfaction, and the healthcare environment.
The winners and runners up listed below were selected from 200 entries in two categories:
Image of Nursing in Clinical Practice
The neonatal ICU team at University Hospital of Brooklyn SUNY Downstate Medical Center, NY, was honored with this award for embodying a positive image of nursing through clinical excellence.
"This team demonstrates that the image of nursing goes beyond the bedside," says judge Shelley Cohen, RN, BSN, CEN. "Their overt support for their professional organization and recognition of the value of specialty certification are essential elements for nursing's professional image."
Runners up are Laurie Anderson, RN, MIS, from Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, Nashua, NH, and Maribel Falzone, from Provena Pine View Care Center, St Charles, IL.
Image of Nursing in Leadership
Dianne Aroh, RN, MS, NEA-BC, chief nursing officer, Hackensack University Medical Center, NJ, received this award for embodying a positive image of nursing through her leadership.
"Dianne Aroh has empowered nurses at the staff level to promote excellence in patient care and in leadership," says Cohen. "She has developed a nurtured, collaborative workforce that is the foundation for promoting the image of nursing today and tomorrow."
Runners up are Kathy Schuler, MS, RN, NE-BC, chief nursing officer at Winchester Hospital, MA, and Debbie Pusateri, MSN, RN, assistant vice president nursing people officer/critical care services/education, from Florida Hospital, Orlando, FL.
The awards were judged by nursing professionals Cohen and Kathleen Bartholomew, RN, RC, MN, coauthors of the book, The Image of Nursing: Perspectives on Shaping, Empowering, and Elevating the Nursing Profession; Sharon Courage, RN, MPH, vice president of hospital services and a senior consultant with The Greeley Company; Laura Harrington, RN, MHA, CPHQ, CHCQM, senior consultant with The Greeley Company; and a team of HCPro senior nursing editors.
Winners will be honored during the HCPro 2009 Nursing Leadership Summit that takes place September 20-23, 2009 in Boston, MA. This national seminar for nurse leaders covers the latest practices, tools, and provides real-life applications to overcome leadership challenges such as promoting accountability, interpreting quality data, teaching critical thinking, and mastering the business side of nursing. Three of the four judges from the Nursing Image Awards will be speaking at this event.
