Cheryl Ericson, MS, RN, is HCPro's new Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Education Director. She brings her CDI expertise to HCPro’s popular CDI Boot Camp and forthcoming ICD-10 for CDI Boot Camp, and plays an integral role as ACDIS continues to lead the industry in CDI training and support.

We are very happy to have Cheryl at HCPro as our new Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Education Director," Murphy said. "She plays an integral role as ACDIS continues to lead the industry in CDI training and support."

Brian Murphy, Director of the Association of Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists (ACDIS), announced recently that Cheryl Ericson, MS, RN, is HCPro's new CDI Education Director.

"We are very happy to have Cheryl at HCPro as our new Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Education Director," Murphy said. "She plays an integral role as ACDIS continues to lead the industry in CDI training and support."

This is a particularly challenging period for CDI professionals as the healthcare industry readies to implement ICD-10-CM/PCS coding. CDI professionals are liaisons between providers and coders, ensuring that physicians and ancillary staff document the care they provide so that coders can report all necessary diagnoses and procedures. Ericson teaches these core CDI skills in HCPro’s popular CDI Boot Camp and forthcoming ICD-10 for CDI Boot Camp.

Ericson has an extensive background in adult education, data analysis, the healthcare revenue cycle, and CMS guidelines. She managed the areas of Utilization Review and CMS Quality Measures at a large, academic medical center and is a certified InterQual instructor.

She is a member of the ACDIS advisory board and has served on many ACDIS workgroups. She served on the AHIMA ICD-10 work group and was a contributor to the new AHIMA exam for CDI. As a member of the 2010 AHIMA CDI work group she contributed to the development of the CDI tool kit and was a co-author on the AHIMA 2010 CDI practice brief.

Ericson has presented at several ACDIS annual conferences, the AHIMA Coding Conference and National Meeting, and at the Sixth (2011) National Medicare RAC Summit. Additional speaking credits include webinars for both the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) and HCPro on topics including physician queries, PEPPER, and understanding the mortality index.

“It is an honor and privilege to become the next CDI Education Director at ACDIS" Ericson said. "It’s an exciting time in the field of CDI with endless opportunities for this profession as the value of concurrent reviews continues to expand beyond reimbursement and the inpatient setting.

"I look forward to working with Brian and the ACDIS Advisory Board to provide the ACDIS membership with the knowledge and support they need to continue to grow their skills in the field of CDI to meet these expanding opportunities and advance the CDI profession,” she said.
