Our research indicated that new ratios were needed to accurately account for the widespread changes buffeting delivery of patient care in the U.S.
PHILADELPHIA, PA (PRWEB) May 15, 2013
Health care strategy consulting firm Health Strategies & Solutions, Inc., has updated its physician-to-population ratios used to forecast physician need in specific markets. Due to major transformations underway in the health care industry, many related to health care reform and reimbursement mechanisms, these updated ratios will allow hospitals and systems to strategically plan for and manage the rate and pace of the changes that are influencing physician recruitment strategies and demand for physician services.
Factors accounted for by the new HS&S ratios include:
- The increased need for primary care physicians during the transition to population health management
- A reduction in the need for some medical, surgical, and hospital-based specialties, as payment incentives shift from production (fee-for-service) to cost-effective, evidence-based care
- The higher percentage of specialists in markets where tertiary services are concentrated
- The effect of population aging
According to Craig Holm, FACHE, senior vice president, Health Strategies & Solutions, Inc., “Our research indicated that new ratios were needed to accurately account for the widespread changes buffeting delivery of patient care in the U.S. The ratios developed by HS&S, which are tailored to the unique characteristics of particular geographic regions, yield results that are far more accurate than national ratios, which presume that all markets should have similar physician-to-population ratios and specialty distributions, despite significant differences in demographic characteristics, practice patterns, and medical sophistication.”
