There are a growing number of physician practices implementing electronic medical records (EMR) in the Bellevue area. This may be influenced by the meaningful use incentives offered by the government under HITECH Act. To meet the community needs, EMRSOAP introduces a HIPAA Assessment package to help local providers and clinics meet HIPAA Privacy and Security compliance.

The HIPAA Assessment examines the practice’s readiness to implement new and/or existing health technologies as it relates to the physical, technical, and administrative safeguards under the HIPAA Security Rule. Documentation is recorded every step of the way to ensure adherence to HIPAA mandates.

The American Medical Association (AMA) President, Cecil B. Wilson, M.D., said in an AMA Commentary, "Physicians should take the time to explore their practice needs, assess their practice's readiness to adopt health IT and select the right system for the practice --and its patients."

Many practices may overlook HIPAA privacy and security when implementing EMRs, either due to limited dedicated resources for small practices or budgetary constraints. HIPAA oversight can open the door to risks of litigation if a privacy breach was not properly handled. With the widespread adoption of EMR applications, it is important that the all ePHI (electronic protected health information) is protected to avoid civil and criminal penalties up to $1.5 Million dollars.(42 USC § 1320d-5).

The HIPAA assessment reduces the liability and risk of litigation which may rise from compliance failures of business associates. The assessment provides a secure platform for health IT applications including: E-prescribing, Electronic Medical Records, Patient Portal, and medical devices.

The HITECH Act has promoted the adoption and use of electronic medical records.

More changes under HITECH Act:

  •     Eligible providers may qualify for up to $64,000 Medicare and Medicaid incentives for adopting certified systems.
  •     Notify individuals of any unauthorized acquisition, access, use, or disclosure of unsecured PHI.
  •     Increased documentation requirements for PHI.
