Lecture Series by University of Washington School of Nursing and UW Medicine Neurosciences Institute, hosted at Era Living Retirement Communities

“It is a thrill to share the latest research in healthy aging with residents and neighbors of the Era Living communities.”

For over two decades, Era Living, a respected leader in retirement living in the Puget Sound, has partnered with the University of Washington School of Nursing, one of the nation’s top nursing schools, to collaborate on developing wellness and active aging programs at its retirement communities.

This spring, Era Living and professors from the School of Nursing are hosting the Habits for Healthy Aging lecture series in which two topics are presented.

Dr. Basia Belza, UW School of Nursing Professor and Lead, Coordinating Center of the CDC-Healthy Aging Research Network presents the topic, “The Sitting Epidemic: Stand Up For Your Health.” Dr. Belza will discuss the current sitting epidemic and provide strategies for being more active. And, Dr. Diana Taibi, UW School of Nursing Assistant Professor and investigator on a study funded by the NIH Center for Research and Management of Sleep Disturbances, presents “Maintaining Sound Sleep as You Age.” Dr. Taibi discusses the importance of sleep, normal changes that occur in sleep as one ages, and evidence-based strategies to improving sleep and managing sleep disturbances.

“It is a thrill to share the latest research in healthy aging with residents and neighbors of the Era Living communities,” said Dr. Belza. “There is always a great turn out and lively discussion.”

To compliment the Habits for Healthy Aging series, and to continue to educate and enhance the lives of older adults, Era Living and UW Medicine Neurosciences Institute have come together to offer a lecture series entitled Healthy Brain Aging. Dr. Tony Avellino, Director of UW Medicine Neurosciences Institute, Chief of Neurological Surgery at UW Medical Center, and UW Professor has brought together a team of experts to cover a range of topics that will give residents and lecture attendees critical knowledge of the aging brain and its practical implications. Dr. Avellino comments, “Dementia is one of the global health crisis of the 21st century and it’s important that we increase public awareness of cognition concerns as one ages.”

“Together, with the University of Washington, we empower our residents as well as the broader community with smart and proven strategies for healthier living,” said Jacob Almo, VP of Operations at Era Living.
