“Creating an eating schedule and amount of food that works to keep weight healthy and breathing more comfortable, COPD is a condition that can be successfully managed.” Mark Rosenberg, M.D.

In their recent newsletter, HealthyAnswers.com reveals that people with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) are at increased risk for developing anorexia which results in unwanted weight loss. They relate that anorexia is not just a condition commonly characterized by young women intentionally not eating to lose weight. Anorexia also refers to any decrease in appetite, and/or food intake, due to complications from illness as can occur with COPD.
HealthyAnswers.com relates that people with COPD can often have problems eating resulting from shortness of breath, fatigue, pressure on their diaphragm, side effects of medications (nausea and indigestion), and depression. COPD patients often just don’t feel like eating, or eating causes anxiety because it may worsen their symptoms afterwards. As a result, they skip meals and weight loss often occurs.
HealthyAnswers.com medical expert Mark Rosenberg, M.D. recommends the following to COPD patients to avoid developing anorexia: 1. Eat smaller more frequent meals – easier on breathing and digestion. 2. Foods like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower contain sulforophanes which have been shown in recent Johns Hopkins University research to rival corticosteroids in fighting inflammation of COPD. 3. Optimal nutrition multivitamin supplements. Liquid formulas may be easier to swallow and digest. 4. Get enough protein to maintain muscle mass and strength. 5. Frequent nutritious, higher calorie, small snacks like cheese, nuts, and peanut butter throughout the day. 6. Adequate water intake avoids dehydration and keeps respiratory phlegms thinned so it is more easily expelled.
