David C. Jamison, Executive Director of the Foundation to Illuminate America’s Heroes (http://www.illuminateamericasheroes.com) stated: “The Foundation has chosen and named legendary Hollywood Producer and great American hero, Merian C. Cooper, as the 'Greatest American Hero of the Twentieth Century'. Merian Cooper voluntarily and heroically risked his life to repay America’s greatest debt. America’s greatest debt is to the foreign heroes who voluntarily came to America’s aid in our hour of need during our War for Independence. Merian Cooper voluntarily created and formed the Kosciuszko Squadron and fought for Poland in the Polish-Bolshevik War of 1919-1921. He and his squadron of volunteer American fighter pilots repaid America’s greatest debt to foreign heroes like Kosciuszko and Pulaski, who risked their lives during our Revolutionary War so that we could live free as a nation. Cooper and his fellow American fighter pilots made a dramatic difference in the Polish-Bolshevik War. Three of the American pilots gave their lives and Cooper’s plane was shot down and he spent months in a Soviet prison of war camp. The Americans helped the Poles smash the Bolsheviks at the gates of Warsaw in what is known as “The Miracle on the Vistula River”. Cooper and other Americans received Poland’s highest military honor, the “Militari Virtuti”, which is the equivalent of our “Congressional Medal of Honor”.

Jamison continued: “Twenty years later during World War II, Cooper left Hollywood, at the height of his great career and re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and became America’s oldest active duty fighter pilot in World War II, flying with the “Flying Tigers” of General Chennault in China.

William Ciosek, who is a founding Board member of the Foundation, has researched the incredible story of Merian Cooper and the Kosciuszko Squadron for over 15 years. He wrote the film treatment, “Honor To You”, which is contained in the Foundation’s website at http://www.illuminateamericasheroes.com. Mr. Ciosek also created the YouTube video film treatment titled: “The Greatest Story Not Yet Told” which can be viewed on the Foundation’s website or on YouTube as: “The Greatest Story Not Yet Told!” This is the first ever film treatment done in a video form. It is also the first ever YouTube video utilizing a viral social media campaign to finance a major Hollywood feature film via donations from the grassroots public to a charitable foundation.

Mr. Ciosek stated: “The Foundation is proud to have named Merian C. Cooper as the “Greatest American Hero of the Twentieth Century”. We believe that the incredible and inspirational true life story of Merian Cooper, who created the Kosciuszko Squadron to repay America’s greatest debt, is the greatest true story of selfless heroism, honor and profound virtue not yet fully made known to the world.

Mr. Ciosek continued: “The Foundation intends to make this great true story known to the public by developing a major Hollywood feature film for the whole world to see. We urge all people to view our YouTube video film treatment, titled: “The Greatest Story Not Yet Told”, or on our website at http://www.illuminateamericasheroes.com.
