Jonathan and Roscoe” is the story of a boy, his family and his dog. Pets are an important part of many families, but the most important part of any family is the people that are in it. Jonathan and his brother, Justin, learn a lesson about responsibility and sharing the love and responsibility of a pet.

Many families find allowing a child a pet to be a fine way to teach a child the lesson of responsibility, and Shephard acknowledges that as an important lesson. His hope is that both readers and parents can begin to lay the groundwork for this lesson by reading his book.
