David and Sean Lonergan, Co-founders of the HIBERNO brand were exceptionally eager and excited to discuss the success of their new brand. David explained that HIBERNO describes the influence of British-English, North American-English, Irish-English and the Irish language to make up the various dialects spoken in Ireland today which is the country of their birth. Sean mentioned that they both like to travel and especially enjoy meeting and learning from other cultures. He said that picking a product that would complement the already successful HIBERNO brand was a real challenge. Their criteria centered around the product being a super gift to receive, it would be visually stunning but would also be fun to use. Six months later and after several ideas that just didn’t seem right, the HIBERNO Scratch off Map was born. David went on to say that once they both agreed on the product, the next step was the most difficult one.
Various design companies were engaged to produce samples based on the company’s strict criteria. David said there was a lot of toing and froing and changing of minds before an agreement was made to proceed with a prototype. When asked if the prototype became the finished article they both laughed. David said that even though it looked good, there was no ‘wow’ factor. Friends and family were engaged to give their opinions and mixed reviews ensued. Despite being behind schedule they both agreed to go back to the drawing board and redesign the map. This proved to be the correct decision as the next prototype was what Sean describes as ‘near perfect.’ A few finishing touches later and friends and family were invited to review again and when all feedback was gathered they knew they had the Scratch Map that was good enough to wear the HIBERNO logo.
The company has already expanded into Europe and is selling mainly in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. Extensive research into the travel industry was conducted to understand which markets across the globe would be receptive to such a product. Results showed that both the US and Germany have similar products available but both David and Sean felt that even though there was no Scratch Map available with the same level of detail, that both markets were not over saturated and their new design would not just give customers an alternative to what is already available but would offer an alternative where no expense was saved on either the quality of the map but also on packaging as this is crucial for people who would want to purchase it as a gift.
Although a small company, both David and Sean have big plans to extend their range of products and to build up repeat buyers who will be confident in purchasing quality products at a reasonable and affordable price. They are using Facebook to keep folks updated with release dates and have prepared a fun video for their customers.
