High Speed Packet Access (HSPA): A Global Strategic Business Report
San Jose, CA (Vocus) July 8, 2010
High Speed Packet Access is the first progressive step headed for providing triple-play services to mobile users. Ever since the launch of first HSPA commercial service in October 2005, it has become the exemplar for mobile broadband service. HSPA refers to the use of both HSDPA (3GPP Rel.5) as well as HSUPA (3GPP Rel.6) technologies on a single network. These technologies are considered an upgrade to the current UMTS networks and will deliver additional network capacity to the carrier, superior bandwidth to the consumer, as well as advanced interactivity for data applications. HSDPA optimizes downlink performance while HSUPA utilizes the E-DCH (Enhanced Dedicated Channel) to improve and optimize uplink performance. HSPA+ (or HSPA Evolved in 3GPP Rel.7 and beyond) also forms a part of HSPA technology and expands the carrier’s investment in the network prior to the next stage to 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE in 3GPP Rel.8 and beyond). HSPA+ is a crucial viaduct to LTE technology, a standard for which, several operators in US, Europe and Asia have pledged to deploy as the next-generation of mobile broadband. Continuing technological enhancements, and rising user demand for high-speed wireless access suggests a strong business case for HSPA networks.
Despite enhanced multimedia capabilities and potential cost savings, spurred by increasing HSPA/HSDPA service usage, some operators may find it difficult in the short term to maintain investment plans for full-fledged transition from HSPA to HSPA+ systems, due to the limited capital-raising opportunities at this time. Some big-pocketed companies will however view HSPA+ as the most cost effective way to seep into mobile broadband arena. The technology utilizes existing spectrum holdings, overlays the current network footprint, and has backward compatibility with all services, making fiscal sense in the present economic condition.
As stated in the new market research report, Europe and North America collectively account for more than half of the global HSPA market estimated in 2009. Although majority of demand for the HSPA networks continues to originate from developed markets such as the US and Europe, growth in the short to medium term period is at its robust best in emerging markets of Asia-Pacific, Central & Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. Given its considerably low penetration level and the large untapped potential customer base, the emerging nations will continue to receive a significant portion of future investments, which augurs well for the HSPA network market.
