Ask any college coach what prevents them from winning the national championship each year and they will consistently point to the time and resource constraints associated with the recruiting process. For years, coaches have spent countless hours and dollars traveling the country in search of quality athleticism. On the other side of the coin, parents and high school athletes have exercised equal amounts of energy to get noticed and prove they're capable of playing at the next level. From expensive camps and combines, to costly athletic biography submissions, parents have been relentless in their attempts to separate their kids from the rest of the pack. And then there was the recession.
Economic pressures on both fronts of the recruiting spectrum have catapulted a new phenomenon, the digital highlight video. Although the concept isn't new, the digital age is supporting a rapid transformation in the way college coaches evaluate athletic potential and high school athletes showcase their talent. Instead of shipping their children off to $500 camps for exposure to one school, parents have discovered affordable investments in quality highlight video productions with links that can be emailed to colleges of interest across the country. Likewise, instead of spending $5,000 on trips to witness the potential of prospective scholarship recipients, coaches are now obtaining impressive results by accessing databases of highlight videos to identify talent that deserves further attention.
Hi-Lights.com, which was established in 2001 and is the largest player in the highlight video production arena, has realized an 83% increase in year-to-date sales volume when compared to the same period last year. "Coming into '09, we were somewhat anxious about the direction of the economy and how it might impact our firm," said Reggie Samuel of Hi-Lights.com. "But we quickly realized that, due to the current economic environment, student athletes and parents with evaporating college funds were actually becoming more aggressive in their pursuit of athletic scholarships. Compared to the other alternatives for gaining recruiting exposure, digital highlight videos are by far the most affordable and effective route to show coaches what you're made of."
Although Mr. Samuel acknowledged that there are numerous athletic databases in existence, he pointed to the lack of value they create without quality highlight videos. "We love it," said Samuel, adding that "there are a handful of really solid athletic recruiting platforms out there, but they all understand that their services are limited without the type of quality video content we've been creating for nearly a decade. For coaches, a recruiting profile without a highlight video is like visiting a movie theater and being forced to simply read the reviews of a film you paid to see as it's projected onto the big-screen."
Most highlight video production firms establish their pricing based on the number games being highlighted. The packages at Hi-Lights.com currently start at $75 and will get you 3 DVD copies of your completed production, entry into their database, your own webpage, and a digital version of your highlight video that can be posted to YouTube as well as other athletic recruiting databases.
