Louisville personal injury lawyer Mat A. Slechter weighs in on the dangers of drinking and driving and hit and run accidents in light of a London, Kentucky, crash.

When people drink too much alcohol and then get behind the wheel of a car, the consequences can be disastrous. Drunk drivers lack good judgment, have slow reaction times and often do things they wouldn’t normally do.

Louisville KY car accident lawyer Mat A. Slechter, of Slechter Law Firm, PLLC, today said a recent hit-and-run accident reportedly involving a drunk driver serves a stark reminder about the dangers of drinking and driving.

Slechter, whose law firm represents people injured in accidents, said more work needs to be done to raise awareness about drunk driving and to keep impaired drivers off the roads.

Kentucky police say an accident near London on April 22, 2013, that resulted in multiple injuries was caused by a man driving under the influence who fled the scene and who has previously been arrested twice for drunk driving, according to WKYT on April 25, 2013.

“If this accident turns out to be caused by drinking and driving, we would not be surprised at all,” Slechter said. “When people drink too much alcohol and then get behind the wheel of a car, the consequences can be disastrous. Drunk drivers lack good judgment, have slow reaction times and often do things they wouldn’t normally do. They take unnecessary risks, often drive too fast and put everyone in danger. That’s why we fight so hard for the rights of people injured in drunk driving accidents. People hurt by drunk drivers didn’t do anything wrong. They shouldn’t have to suffer because of someone else’s reckless behavior.”

The accident happened in Laurel County on a road eight miles west of London, Kentucky, according to WHAS 11 News on April 24, 2013. Sheriff John Root told WHAS that witnesses reported seeing a sport utility vehicle weaving and speeding when it ran off the road and struck a tree. Six people were reportedly in the vehicle at the time of the accident, but only one person was in the SUV when police arrived, WHAS reported.

Children ages 8 and 9 years old and two women were later found to have injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to Kentucky.com on April 24, 2013. Police also discovered beer cans and whiskey bottles in the SUV. As a result, police issued an arrest warrant for Elmer E. Oakley, 30, of London, according to Kentucky.com.

If police apprehend Oakley, he will face his third offense for driving under the influence of alcohol in five years, WKYT reported. Oakley also faces felony charges of wanton endangerment and endangering the welfare of a minor, according to WKYT.

Slechter said people who are drinking alcohol should be responsible and choose a designated driver or call a taxi. He said people who are hosting a party should always offer non-alcoholic beverages and serve plenty of food, which can slow the rate of alcohol absorption. He said parents should tell their teenagers to always feel free to call them for a ride home if they are at a party and had too much to drink, and their teenagers should never accept a ride with someone who has been drinking.

“We hope Kentucky law enforcement continues to crack down on drunk drivers,” Slechter said. “The authorities need to send a clear and strong message that irresponsible and reckless behavior will not be tolerated. We do the same thing every time we defend the rights of innocent people injured by drunk drivers. We don’t rest until justice is served.”
