Developed in conjunction with Clarion Co., Ltd, SkyAngle is a new camera monitoring system that captures synthesised images from several wide-angle cameras mounted on the truck and displayed on a monitor in the cab. This technology provides a comprehensive “bird’s-eye view” focused on the machine and its surroundings.
Operators have the ability to switch between images from a “wide-range view” to a “close-range view” mode, providing detailed monitoring of a wide area. SkyAngle allows operators to evaluate the position of surrounding machinery or service vehicles within their proximity, ultimately designed to support a safer working environment.
The new SkyAngle monitoring system is the latest development from Hitachi Construction Machinery in a number of initiatives designed to enhance on-site safety.
In 2001, the company led the industry with the launch of a monitoring system featuring a rear-view camera and display as optional equipment for hydraulic excavators. This was followed by the introduction of this type of monitoring system in 2006, by Hitachi Mining, as a standard feature on all hydraulic excavators of 6.5 tonnes or larger.
The new system is made up of a number of components including:
- Four cameras (front, rear, right side, left side)
- Image synthesis controller (inside operator’s compartment)
- Display monitor (inside operator’s compartment)
As part of continued initiatives to promote safety, SkyAngle will initially be equipped on Hitachi mining dump trucks with future plans to expand the new technology to other products such as Hitachi’s giant hydraulic excavators. The application of this monitoring technology will set the benchmark in the area of on-site safety for mining companies across the globe.
