Progressive Health Services, leaders in STD and HIV testing in San Diego, Los Angeles, and throughout Southern California, concurs with the CDC’s recent report that transmission of sexually transmitted diseases is common through oral sex.
“STD’s are frequently transmitted through oral sex, not just through vaginal intercourse,” says Suzann Gage, OB/GYN nurse practitioner and clinical director of Progressive Health Services in San Diego. “We have seen many cases of STD infections passed to a partner through oral sex.”
Gage continues, “At Progressive Health Services we have tested a significant number of people positive for gonorrhea that was transmitted from a man’s penis or woman’s vagina to a partner’s throat during oral sex, or, likewise, from an infected person’s throat to a partner’s genitals. We have also tested many people positive for genital herpes that was transmitted from cold sores or fever blisters on the mouth to a partner’s genitals through oral sex. We have even seen cases where genital herpes sores had been transmitted to a partner’s mouth through oral sex. Additionally, we have also seen Gay men test positive for HIV who become infected from getting HIV infected semen in their mouth, eye or on broken skin .”
Progressive Health Services provides comprehensive STD and HIV testing and treatment including testing for gonorrhea and chlamydia of the throat, which is done by gently swabbing the throat with a q-tip and sending the specimen to a lab.
With regards to the CDC observation that many teens practice oral sex so they can feel like they are not actually having sex, Gage notes that “Many heterosexual couples practice oral sex, and sometimes anal sex, rather than have vagina intercourse to avoid pregnancy. However oral and anal sex will not prevent transmission of STDs. We encourage anyone who participates in any form of unprotected oral or anal sex to be tested for all STDs.”
