The NHL playoffs are well underway and as teams are eliminated, it is becoming apparent that the NHL could see a potential first-time champion hoist the coveted Stanley Cup. As a result, the demand for hockey tickets is driven upwards, according to national ticket broker Select-A-Ticket.
Fans in markets such as Washington, St. Louis, Los Angeles and to a lesser extend Phoenix and Nashville have waited years for their shot at the Stanley Cup. Each of those teams remains in the race as the playoffs are nearly at the halfway point.
Part of the magic of the NHL playoffs is any team involved can win the Stanley Cup. A team just needs to qualify and be playing good hockey with timely goaltending to make it deep in the playoffs. Fans are filled with hopes and dreams of a Cinderella run to the Stanley Cup.
In 2011 the Boston Bruins entered as the number three seed in the Eastern Conference and rewarded their diehard fans with their first Stanley Cup Championship in 39 years.
This year has already seen the defending champion Bruins eliminated, the President’s Trophy winning Vancouver Canucks knocked out by the West’s number 8 seed Los Angeles, and highly talented teams such as Detroit, Pittsburgh and Florida sent packing.
The NHL playoffs are currently down to the following 8 teams, one of which will be the Stanley Cup Champions: New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, Phoenix Coyotes, Nashville Predators, and Los Angeles Kings.
Only the Rangers, Flyers and Devils have previously won the Stanley Cup so a franchise first may be in store for a lucky fanbase should one of the other teams emerge as the champions.
"The Stanley Cup playoffs comprise the best time of year to be a hockey fan. From the frenzied schedule of the early rounds, to late night overtime games, to the win-at-all-costs play seen in the finals, this is the best level of hockey you are going to see all year, by far. If your team is involved, there is nothing that can compare to being at a home game during the playoffs, the crowds are intense, every play can win or lose the game or even the series. The atmosphere cannot be matched or explained, you just have to experience it," says Tom Patania, President and CEO at Select-A-Ticket.
