Students and science enthusiasts alike were reminded firsthand that science is exciting, as distinguished physicist Dr. Berebichez presented Holosonics Audio Spotlight technology at TED’s premier TEDYouth event in New York City.

Similar to the premise of the “Humanly Impossible” National Geographic television program which Berebichez hosts, the very performance of the Audio Spotlight system itself seems impossible at first glance. Harnessing the miniature wavelength of an ultrasonic carrier and taking advantage of the predictable non-linearities associated to the physics of air, the Audio Spotlight system is able to produce a narrow laser-like beam of audible sound – allowing the user to provide sound where they want, and maintain the quiet elsewhere. Just like aiming the beam of light from a flashlight, a precise location can be illuminated with sound using Holosonics unique speakers.

TEDYouth's theme was "Play, Learn, Build, and Share," and Berebichez felt the Audio Spotlight was just the device to relay the event's spirit. A thin, flat ultrasonic transducer that turns the air itself into a speaker with laser-like directivity... She had no doubt that the demonstration was worthwhile as she panned across the audience with the sound beam, watching the ensuing smiles and reactions.

As Berebichez explained, “The people attending the TEDYouth conference in NYC were quite impressed with the Audio Spotlight speaker from Holosonics, and many of them asked to play with it. While they agreed controlling light with lasers is now a ubiquitous phenomenon, they contemplated Holosonics speakers being used everywhere.”

About Deborah Berebichez, Ph.D.

Deborah Berebichez is the first Mexican woman to graduate with a physics Ph.D. from Stanford University.
