Founded over 40 years ago, Crestron is a big name in the high-end home automation business. This New Jersey based company provides home automation products across the globe to homes, hotels and businesses.

Crestron's system is designed to do just about anything. One feature is the creation of "scenes" that allows the homeowner to change the environment in the room using preprogrammed "scenes". For example, "Goodbye" might arm the security system, turn off the lights and adjust the thermostat. The nice thing about Crestron is the option to program and control a house with various devices including a touch screen keypad, iPod, iPad or web based Smartphone.

Crestron sells their home automation products through authorized dealers in local areas. Typically a handful of dealers is available in most metro areas. The challenge with Creston is that many customers report program constraints that require the use of a paid technician to assist. Where some home automation systems are user friendly enough for the homeowner to program, many Crestron customers have reported repeated visits from a technician to fix thermostat settings or establish other preprogrammed automation that would generally not be as difficult to establish.

Another challenge is the overall cost. Crestron is definitely one of the more expensive home automation systems in the market. Each device the homeowner establishes with Crestron's app has to be separately programmed and that comes with an expensive licensing fee. While many people are willing to pay the price for this long standing home automation system, the average consumer may not be able to afford it.
