Swinton Offers Advice to UK Flood Risk Homeowners

Leading UK high street insurance retailer Swinton is advising homeowners not to let their home insurance slip following recent flash floods.

Manchester UK (PRWEB) June 23, 2009 -- With the South-West and South-East and some places in East Anglia recovering from a monthly average rainfall in just a few hours this week, Swinton is advising homeowners to ensure they protect their homes against flooding.

Homeowners looking to save cash by canceling or not renewing home insurance policies are being warned this could prove costly in the long run.

Steve Chelton, insurer development manager at Swinton said: "Many people never consider the impact that natural disasters can have on their home. Disasters such as floods can be extremely distressing, but by having home insurance you are protecting your home in advance which could be the first positive step to rebuilding your home if the worst happens."

Swinton is also urging homeowners recently affected by flooding to get in touch with their local branch and take advantage of the advisers' knowledge and experience when going through the claims process.

Swinton is offering the following advice on making a successful flood claim:

  • Ring your insurer's help line to report all damage
  • Use a camera to film and record flood damage - both the property and to your possessions
  • Mark the water levels on the wall for reference
  • Wait for the insurance company to give their approval before carrying out any repair work
  • Take your time documenting everything that is damaged
  • Do not redecorate for at least three months after the walls have dried or it could result in mould, blistering or peeling
  • Do not dispose of any item until you are told by your insurer you are able to
  • Get several quotes from firms recommended by your insurance firm, friends, family
  • Beware of builders touting door-to-door. They may not be appropriately trained or qualified and only keen to exploit your vulnerability
  • NEVER pay cash in advance
  • Get signed receipts for all work done
