Parent Quick Tips for Math Homework Help and Reading Homework Help

Tip: Homework Organization: The key to helping your child stay organized this school year isn't buying school supplies, a calendar or a homework planner, it's making sure your student knows how to - and remembers to - use the system you choose together to organize school homework assignments.

Tip: Homework Help: When your kid says, "I don't want to do homework," talk with your child to find out what's going on - this will help you develop a plan of action. Sometimes, talking it through will even solve the problem!

Tip: Homework Time: Scheduling a routine study time helps prevent frustration by setting up a time that your child can expect to dedicate to homework. Ask your child to help choose the time so that your student feels ownership.

Tip: Reading Homework Help: When your student has trouble sounding out a word or understanding a word meaning, have your child check a glossary or dictionary for the pronunciation and definition. Ask, "From that sentence, what do you think the word ___ means?"

Tip: Reading Homework Help: When your child has trouble understanding the main idea of a reading passage, have your student come up with a title for the paragraph he just read. Ask, "What happened in the story?"

Tip: Reading Homework Help: When your kid has trouble remembering the details of a passage, have your child take notes as she reads to organize the information. Ask your child to re-read a paragraph aloud and tell you the specifics about what just happened.

Tip: Reading Homework Help: When your child has trouble understanding the purpose of a story, have your child underline or highlight parts of the reading passage that might show why the author wrote the story or essay. Ask, "Who do you think the author wrote this story for?"

Tip: Math Homework Help: To help your child master addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, use grade-appropriate flash cards to find out how fluent your child is with math facts. Use 10 minutes of study time to review facts your student doesn't know right away.

Tip: Math Homework Help: When your kid struggles with understanding what a word problem is asking, ask questions to help guide your child through the problem. Have your child read the question again slowly. Ask, "What is the question asking you to find? What do you need to know to find the answer?"

Tip: Math Homework Help: When your kid struggles with solving a word problem, have your child underline, circle and box different parts of the math question or terms that relate to each other. Ask, "What patterns or relationships do you see in the question?"

Tip: Math Homework Help: When your child finishes a challenging word problem, say, "You finished it! Great job - show me how you figured it out." This will help your child reflect on the problem and learn how to approach similar math problems in the future.
