Light your coals and pack your bowls for the 2009 YouTube "Hookah Tricks" contest. All hookah enthusiasts 18 years of age older are invited to participate as both contestants and judges.

RSS, the leading online retailer of hookah and shisha products, has launched a world-wide contest to determine who has the best "hookah trick." The contest is open to all adult hookah smokers (18 years of age or older) . Entrants are encouraged to make a short video showcasing a novel and unique way to improve one's hookah smoking experience or demonstrate an entertaining trick using a hookah. Videos will be uploaded to's YouTube group, and selected entries will be posted on the website for visitors of the site to vote on.

The deadline for entries is Friday, October 9th, and the selected videos will be open for voting until Friday, October 16th. Suggested topics include various shisha tobacco flavor mixes, unique ways to blow smoke rings, and ways to increase the flavor, longevity, or thickness of the hookah smoke. Three prizes of $300, $200, and $100 in store credit will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner, respectively.    

Hookahs, which are tall water pipes used for smoking flavored tobacco through long hoses, have increased in popularity over the last 10 years, especially amongst the young adult crowd. Originating in the Middle East, hookah smoking is a social activity stemming from cultural traditions that is gaining mainstream appreciation, mainly due to the proliferation of Hookah Bars and lounges opening in college towns. Hookah tobacco, known in North America as "shisha," consists of dried tobacco leaves soaked in honey or molasses and flavoring, which is then heated by hot coals placed atop the tobacco bowl. was started in 1998 by two brothers as a college project at the University of Texas at Austin.
