William McKinley IS 259, in conjunction with Hope For The Warriors®, will dedicate an Armed Forces Memorial at the school on May 21, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. Senior leaders from the military, FDNY, and NYPD will also be in attendance for this official unveiling. William McKinley IS 259 is located at 7301 Fort Hamilton Parkway, Brooklyn, NY. Hope For The Warriors®is a national nonprofit organization that assists post-9/11 service members, their families, and families of the fallen who have sustained physical and psychological wounds in the line of duty.
The memorial is the first of its kind in the nation, honoring those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is more than 270 feet long and contains art work, poetry, and more than 6,000 names painstakingly recorded in gold. The FDNY and NYPD will honor firefighters and police officers who served after 9/11 in Iraq or Afghanistan and who lost their lives. Present at the dedication will be members of the Armed Forces including Sgt. Maj. Bryan Battaglia, USMC. Fire Commissioner Sal Cassano and numerous chiefs from FDNY and NYPD will also attend.
The work on the memorial began months ago by the students of the middle school. Throughout the year, service members, veterans, and family members of the fallen visited the school and presented their “stories” to the students. Much of the art work and poetry was inspired by the speakers.
“Hope For The Warriors® was excited to be part of this tribute to our fallen military heroes,” Tina Atherall, Hope For The Warriors® Executive Vice President said. “We are thankful to the school for allowing their students to witness firsthand the pain and sacrifices made by our military forces and their families.”
