Author, professor and structural engineer Horst Berger explains and illustrates the tensile structures he’s created throughout his prolific career in his book, “Light Structures - Structures of Light: The Art and Engineering of Tensile Architecture Illustrated by the Work of Horst Berger” (published by AuthorHouse).
“Having developed, designed and engineered innovative fabric roof structures for quite a number of landmark buildings I felt there is a story that needs to be told,” writes Berger, “especially since the technology was new and almost entirely without precedents. Nothing like it had been built at this scale and this pure form.”
“Light Structures - Structures of Light” describes and illustrates the process of developing a number of lightweight, long span roof structures with an amazing lightness and haunting beauty that makes the structure clear and visible. It is a carefully illustrated book with more than 400 illustrations, written in the form of stories that illuminate the background of the process. Berger makes the technology understandable for the lay person, though it has enough detail to make it valuable for architects and engineers. Though the technology is cutting edge, connections are made to some of the oldest human building forms.

About the Author
Horst Berger is an internationally recognized structural engineer, whose own practices have included Horst Berger Partners and Geiger Berger Associates. His work has been instrumental in bringing tensile technology and design into the real world of architecture on a very large scale. Berger’s structures stand out both as technological achievements and as creative architectural art. His main objectives are to create large span spaces with less effort and more grace, to enrich architectural spaces, make architecture more widely affordable and bring buildings more in tune with the environment. His many built structures demonstrate this realization. Since 1990, Berger has taught at The City College of New York’s Spitzer School of Architecture. In 2002, the City University of New York made him a distinguished professor.
