Thirty-three programs have been named as finalists for the 2010 Hospital Charitable Service Awards (Awards). Of these, only ten programs will be selected to share equally in a $100,000 award fund.

According to Charles R. Evans, FACHE, who serves as chairman of the Awards program, award recipients will be announced at a banquet during a national hospital charitable services conference in Atlanta, Georgia on February 3, 2011.

“Having reviewed over 110 nominations for this year’s program, it is clear that there are a lot of hospitals in the U.S. doing amazing charitable work,” said Evans. “We hope, over time, that this Awards program shines a positive light on hospitals that are finding creative, collaborative and innovative ways to serve their communities.”

Hospital programs applied based upon five criteria areas: community impact, innovation, collaboration, transferability and best practice. Not all applicants were accepted, according to Evans.

“We created the Awards program to encourage the spread of best practice charitable programs,” said Evans. “In addition to rewarding the nation’s model charitable programs, we are building a community of individuals and hospitals around evidence-based approaches to community benefit and charitable services.”

In early 2010, a group of senior healthcare executives joined forces to launch the Awards program under the sponsorship of Jackson Healthcare. This is the program’s inaugural year.

Through mid-October, Jackson Healthcare received applications from hospital programs throughout the United States. Only those applications that met the Awards program criteria were accepted as official nominees. There were 110 hospital programs named as official nominees.

Between October and early December, the Awards committee and advisory board narrowed the field to 33 finalists. These finalists are listed on the Awards program website (http://www.jacksonhealthcare.com/stories/2010-hospital-charitable-service-awards-finalists.aspx ).

Through January, an advisory committee will conduct reference checks and deliberate to select ten Award recipients from among the finalists.

About the Hospital Charitable Service Awards
The Hospital Charitable Service Awards is a national program sponsored by Jackson Healthcare. It recognizes hospitals whose commitment to their community -- whether defined locally, regionally, nationally or globally -- goes beyond “community benefit” and “free care” and has led to innovative efforts to improve community health and increase access to healthcare education and services.

All hospital-funded charitable programs are eligible to participate regardless of the size, tax or ownership model. A national charitable services conference is scheduled in Atlanta, Georgia on February 3, 2011 to bring together individuals and hospitals in an effort to explore evidence-based approaches to community benefit and charitable services.
