Welcome to the Digital Age of Plant Care: Trident Design Unveils the Thirsty Light Digital

Houseplant care is going digital with the international debut of the Thirsty Light Digital™: a 'green thumb' designed to take the guess work out of watering for houseplant enthusiasts and urban gardeners around the globe. The Thirsty Light is now available for $9.95 and begins shipping today.

Columbus, OH (PRWEB) November 20, 2007 -- Tired of killing your houseplants? If you've ever played amateur botanist at home, chances are you've lost a few plants along the way... Trident Design, LLC is aiming to increase your plants' odds for survival with their latest innovation: The Thirsty Light Digital™ featuring Drypoint™ Technology.

Resembling a green lollipop, the Thirsty Light is a convenient moisture sensor that continuously monitors the moisture levels of a potted plant. The digital green thumb features a blinking LED, which alerts the user when the soil is dry and the plant is thirsty. The speed of the blink intuitively increases as the soil gets dryer, with five levels of sensitivity. With the Thirsty Light Digital, you will never have to guess when your plants need watering.

The Thirsty Light is easy to use by every plant lover and makes a great gift or stocking stuffer during the holidays. It works with most houseplants, its batteries are replaceable and its LED light will last for the life of the product. The Thirsty Light Digital carries an affordable MSRP of $9.95 per one pack. It is available to purchase from www.thirstylight.com and coming soon to a variety of retail partners.

The patent pending Thirsty Light functions based on digital technology called Drypoint. It consists of two primary components: a sensor at the tip of a probe and a digital circuit housed in a pod. Placed in soil, the sensor measures the electrical resistance of the environment once every second, with lower resistance indicating higher moisture levels. The digital circuit then interprets the results and takes the appropriate action, either emitting a blinking pattern or remaining dormant.

The Thirsty Light Digital solves the age-old problem of keeping houseplants properly watered. Improper watering kills more houseplants than any other cause. While water is necessary for plant life, too much water in the soil forces air away from the roots, blocking the oxygen supply, in effect drowning the plant. If the soil isn't allowed to dry sufficiently between watering it can lead to root rot. Alternatively, under-watering damages a plant's roots, causing them to wilt and eventually wither. It is difficult to tell when plants need watering without digging your fingers down into the soil, a messy chore. The Thirsty Light Digital effectively communicates the plants' water needs to its owner without detracting from their beauty and without any annoying chirping or buzzing, a trait that characterizes earlier soil monitoring devices.

Trident Design's Founder and Chief Inventor, Chris Hawker, spent 2 years developing the Thirsty Light after killing yet another round of his own houseplants and finding no quality solutions on the market. "The Thirsty Light was developed out of my own frustration with repeatedly killing my plants; I could never tell when to water them and the existing solutions all came up short. I wanted a device that didn't annoy me with noises, that wasn't tacky or cheesy, but was well designed, accurate and reliable. The Thirsty Light actually makes me feel more connected to my plants. I pay more attention to them now since they can communicate with me, and they certainly are doing better. I call it my 'green thumb on a stick'."
