Research reveals that 70 percent of women eligible for breast reconstruction are not being informed of their options. This year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and The Plastic Surgery Foundation have established BRA Day USA to take place on October 17, 2012. The Goal of BRA Day USA is to ensure that all breast cancer patients are fully informed of their surgical options and supported by a team of medical professionals working together for the patient’s best interest.

Basu Plastic Surgery will be hosting a Question & Answer Symposium at North Cypress Medical Center on October 15, 2012 from 5-7pm. This event is open to breast cancer patients and their families and friends to gain more knowledge about their options for breast reconstruction in Houston. Dr. Basu will be giving a presentation about breast reconstruction and answering questions about the different options for breast reconstruction. Dr. Basu and Dr. Kim have also invited their current breast reconstruction patients to attend the event and have asked them to share their personal stories about breast reconstruction.

Dr. Basu and Dr. Kim want to make sure breast cancer patients know that they are not alone when making this important decision and that they are informed of their choices. “Studies show that almost two-thirds of women facing breast cancer were never told about their options for breast reconstruction and restoration after their cancer treatment," said Dr. Basu. “As a community of health care providers, we need to do a better job educating our patients about their options. And the good news – breast reconstruction is covered by insurance as part of their cancer treatment plan.”
