Haag-Streit UK (HS-UK), the leading manufacturer and distributor of gold-standard optometry and ophthalmic equipment, has recently completed the installation of equipment for an extensive refurbishment project at Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) Eye Department.

The RVI Eye Department are due to become ‘Newcastle Eye Centre’ over the summer of 2013, in a move that will bring together their patient care, research and education arms under one banner. As part of this, the department were looking to refurbish their equipment, and approached HS-UK for the replacement of their slit lamps. The large-scale refurbishment project involved the replacement of existing equipment with new Haag-Streit slit lamps, including; BP900s, BM900s and BQ900s.

The RVI chose BP900 slit lamps as they are modular, so have the flexibility to be upgraded in the future. They also have a cross-slide mechanism which brings significant improvement for imaging application and functionality.

The BQ900 slit lamps were provided with IM900 imaging modules, making them fully imaging-ready and able to produce high-resolution anterior segment photography or video. All slit lamps now have Goldmann tonometers, LED illumination and improved magnification. The use of LED as opposed to tungsten bulbs will avoid the need for costly and time-consuming bulb changes.

The clinic has chosen state-of-the-art refraction units for the slit lamps, which HS-UK organised specifically to fit in with the space available, and the needs of each individual room.

The ophthalmology department at Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary is one of the largest in the UK, treating and caring for over 100,000 patients each year. The department prides itself on the state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities available and has over 200 highly specialised healthcare professionals working for the ophthalmology department.

Mr. Michael Clarke, Clinical Director and Consultant Ophthalmologist at the RVI, was instrumental in organising the installation project. Michael said, “We have been very impressed with the efficient service we have received from HS-UK, from initial consultation through to the installation of the equipment. We chose Haag-Streit as we wanted new gold-standard slit lamps to replace our existing equipment, not only to provide the best possible care for our patients, but also to improve the facilities we have for training and education.”

Michael continued, “The installation has been organised with minimal disruption to clinic services, as HS-UK staff worked through the weekend to make this possible. I believe that patients will see a real benefit from the new equipment, as we will be able to provide a faster, more efficient service.”

Angela Masson, HS-UK Area Sales Manager commented, “This was a huge project which has involved a tremendous amount of organisation from our experienced team of Service Engineers, as well as the HS-UK sales team. I believe that this project has further cemented the relationship between HS-UK and the Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.”
