HTL - Hurricane Test Laboratory LLC, a leading architectural and fenestration testing lab, announces the addition of explosive shock tube testing services at their blast mitigation evaluation facility outside of Lubbock, Texas. This proprietary technology gives manufacturers another option to conduct tests that provide more data at reduced costs and with shorter timelines.
“Due to a global increase in terrorist and criminal threats and attacks the demand for blast resistant building products has increased dramatically,” says Vinu Abraham, P.E. and CEO of HTL. “This in turn has prompted manufacturers of blast resistant building products to seek more cost effective and time sensitive means by which to develop these products.”
HTL’s new explosive shock tube has many key features to help manufacturers develop improved blast resistant building products. They include:
•Reduced testing costs – since HTL’s explosive shock tube operates using small quantities of high explosives, its operating costs are lower than those of a pneumatic shock tube. Therefore, HTL can offer lower costs to manufacturers to have their products evaluated in HTL’s explosive shock tube.
•More efficient testing – HTL’s explosive shock tube is designed for rapid setup and removal of test specimens. This exclusive design feature allows HTL to test multiple test specimens in one day, thereby lowering travel costs for clients who want to witness the testing.
•Use of actual explosives – since HTL’s explosive shock tube testing utilizes an actual explosion, test specimens experience both a positive and negative phase during testing. Consequently, an explosive shock tube test provides results very similar to those seen in the benchmark test for blast resistant products – open arena blast testing.
•Flexible test parameters – Another distinctive feature of HTL’s explosive shock tube is the ability to effortlessly vary charge weight and standoff distances based on test requirements. This gives manufacturers the unique ability gather data on their products to multiple blast loadings.
•Correlation of test results – since HTL operates both a full scale arena and an explosive shock tube, manufacturers will now have the ability to correlate results obtained using each method of blast testing and build their internal data base for future product design iterations.
Abraham states “HTL has unique capabilities and extensive experience with full scale arena blast testing and our unique explosive shock tube allows us to cost-effectively test the structural response of items such as windows, doors and walls to the blast loading associated with large explosions.”
HTL’s explosive shock tube test utilizes standard test methods ASTM F1642 (Glazing and Glazing Systems Subject to Air Blast Loadings), GSA-TS01-2003 (Glazing and Window Systems Subject to Dynamic Overpressure Loadings), and AAMA 510-06 (Voluntary Guide for Blast Hazard Mitigation Systems for Fenestration Products). These test methods were established as a rating system to compare the potential risk of glazing systems subjected to bomb blasts.
