Enables companies to deliver rich cross-platform smartphone and tablet applications using advanced web technologies without proprietary interpreters

Solutions such as Worklight's that enables enterprises to uniquely leverage a range of development methodologies without locking them into proprietary technologies is a compelling model for customers seeking to reach the largest set of mobile users.

Worklight, the leading HTML5, native and hybrid platform for smartphone and tablet apps, announced today the availability of Worklight 4.1, allowing companies and their development partners to build, run and manage HTML5 mobile web apps without use of proprietary interpreters. This latest release of Worklight’s mobile app platform also enables companies to develop Windows Phone 7 hybrid apps, in addition to enhanced security and app management features.

HTML5 mobile web apps provide significant benefits to companies because they do not require app store or market approval, they can be updated without requiring user download, and can deliver high-quality user experience across multiple smartphones and tablets using commonly available web development skills.

“HTML5 mobile development is on the rise as companies realize the importance of balancing developer efficiency with user experience and seamless app performance,” said Shahar Kaminitz, Worklight CEO. “We’re proud to augment our native and hybrid app support, as the first mobile app platform to enable robust, enterprise-grade mobile web apps for customers and employees.”

With its full support of HTML5 web app development, Worklight also provides the ability to include offline caching of app resources, including images, videos, and data on iOS and Android devices for rapid app performance. Moreover, developers leveraging the Worklight Studio can now build mobile web apps using HTML4 for devices that support modern browsers such as BlackBerry 5, Nokia Symbian S60 3rd Edition and Windows Phone 7.

Worklight continues to expand its multi-device support, leveraging the Worklight Studio, the world’s first multi-platform, hybrid-coding IDE to achieve the highest levels of development openness and flexibility. With this latest release, companies can use Worklight to extend apps to Windows Phone 7 devices, while combining native and web code to access native user interface components, such as a dialog box, busy notification, application bar and the device's back button. Research firm IDC forecasts that by 2015, 20.9 percent of smartphones shipped will be powered by Windows Phone.

Worklight 4.1 also includes the following new features:

  • Direct App Update – Enforced update of applications without requiring users to explicitly download the latest version
  • Secure on-Device Storage – 256-bit encryption of data delivered from backend systems to the app or input by the user
  • Push Notification Console – Visual tracking and management of app notifications across devices, operating systems and versions

“Solutions such as Worklight's that enables enterprises to uniquely leverage a range of development methodologies without locking them into proprietary technologies is a compelling model for customers seeking to reach the largest set of mobile users,” said Stephen Drake, Program Vice President for Mobility and Telecom research, IDC. “Adopting a similar open approach can help deliver unique mobile experiences to both customers and employees.”

“With Worklight, we enable our clients to go to market quickly with rich cross-platform apps, while efficiently extending our existing suite of services to new mobile channels,” said Shay Alon, CEO at FIS, a leading insurance solutions provider. “With this latest release, Worklight continues to raise the bar in mobile innovation.”

The Worklight mobile platform is a robust, enterprise-grade infrastructure that enables development, integration and management of rich mobile applications. The platform consists of the Worklight Studio, a multi-platform IDE for native, web and hybrid development; the Worklight Server for secure delivery and back-end integration; the Worklight Console for ongoing management and dynamic control of applications and infrastructure; and the Worklight Device Runtime for accessing native device functionality, UI features, and other runtime application services.
