New York, NY (PRWEB) November 07, 2012
BLB released a statement of support for the storm-ravaged New York City alongside a list of large events that have been cancelled in the wake of the storm. Organizers of events such as Heidi Klum's 13 annual Halloween bash and the ING New York City Marathon made the decision to pull the plug due to the devastation the tropical storm brought on the city.
Klum's Halloween bash was set to be the opening event for The Finale, a new nightclub from New York nightlife moguls Mark Birnbaum and Eugene Remm of EMM Group. The club was one of dozens forced to close it's doors following the landfall of Sandy.
The ING New York City Marathon annually draws more than 100,000 applicants from around the world and has continued to grow since it's inception in 1970, with more than 47,000 runners finishing the race in 2011. A public outcry led to the eventual announcement that the ING New York City Marathon was cancelled for 2012 due to continued power outages and the need for city resources to help clean up after Sandy. Shortly after the announcement nearly 1,300 marathon runners took to the streets to hand out donated supplies to Staten Island residents where many homes were destroyed. Other runners who planned on taking part in the marathon decided to take part in their own version, completing a 26.2-mile circuit that ended near the original Central Park finish line.
BLB's list of cancelled events were called off for a variety of reasons including damaged venues, power outages and lack of supplies, as well as in support of those still dealing with the aftermath. Among the events cancelled are the marathon, the season-opener between the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Knicks, New York Public Library Lions gala, Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation's 10th anniversary gala, New York Magazine's New York Taste, Heidi Klum's annual Halloween bash and several fashion shows and presentations in conjunction with Market Week.
Hurricane Sandy caused mass destruction to New York City and as a result has upset the personality of the city, as events normally used to help define the city, such as the New York City Marathon, have been cancelled in the days following the storm. For the most part the list of cancelled events continued to grow over the weekend due to public outcry and in support for those most affected by the storm.
