Parker Waichman LLP, a national law firm dedicated to protecting the rights of victims affected by natural and environmental disasters, notes that according to an Order filed on May 30, Hurricane Sandy-related litigation against the Long Island Power Authority and/or National Grid will be consolidated into one action in the Supreme Court, County of Nassau, under index no. 602288/2012 (entitled In Re Long Island Power Authority Hurricane Sandy Litigation). Additionally, the Firm notes that the Court has Ordered the formation of a Plaintiffs Steering Committee consisting of Co-Lead Counsels – including Parker Waichman LLP – in the now-consolidated lawsuits against the Long Island Power Authority and/or National Grid.

As the court papers reveal, all consolidated litigations arise from the effects of Hurricane Sandy, which struck the northeastern United States in October 2012. Billions of dollars in losses have been reported due to the damage and destruction of thousands of homes and structures on Long Island, as well as prolonged power outages throughout the region. The various complaints allege that the Defendants failed to properly prepare for the storm; in addition, they also: failed to adequately warn their customers, did not establish a proper emergency management system, failed to maintain power distribution equipment, and breached their contract with their customers to provide adequate service.

“This consolidation is helpful based on the commonalities of the Plaintiff’s allegations,” said Peter J. Cambs Sr., Senior Litigation Counsel at Parker Waichman LLP. “We believe Parker Waichman LLP will be an asset as well, based on our extensive proven track record handling both class action litigation and complex litigation.” Cambs added that, in addition, the proposed structure with Co-Lead Counsels will reduce duplications and help to insure a consistent strategy is in place that will best serve the interests of the victims.
