The link to mental illness and its adverse effects to society is irrefutable. In the United States alone, violent acts made it across headlines, shocking the hoi polloi and prompting authorities to improve safety measures and crisis response should similar incidents take place at some point in time. Take the case of the recent Colorado shooting in an Aurora movie theater and Sandy Hook Elementary School. Measures devised to respond to these tragedies are commendable, but H. V. Smith, PhD. believes such can be nipped in the bud through early identification and consequently, timely intervention. In his debut book titled “4 Step Process To Mental Illness,” the author puts forward an invaluable tool that will aid families and help them identify some red flag signs of mental illness.

According to americanprogress.org, mental illness affects some estimated 44 million adults and 13.7 million children in America each year. As if these figures are not surprising enough, it is reported that “fewer than half of adults and only one-third of children with a diagnosable mental disorder receive treatment.” What is more alarming is the stigma associated with the lack of knowledge and awareness of mental conditions. This only aggravates the situation as more and more individuals shy away from professional help for fear of humiliation and being cast out from society.

The well-written and well-timed publication is an educational tool that helps readers determine if they should seek professional or additional help. Herein, Dr. Smith presents the four-step process designed to assist individuals and families alike that may be or is dealing with someone afflicted with mental illness. By providing and expounding mental health information in layman’s terms, it allows for one to gain a better understanding of the disorder, circumstances and other contributing factors. It is worth mentioning that this book is not a definite diagnosis reference, rather it aids in identifying the common signs and symptoms that may well require professional intervention before they worsen and cause serious problems.

Dr. Smith believes knowledge is power and being able to recognize the signs of mental illness is the first step for treatment. An up-to-date book that sheds more light to the increasing numbers of people affected by mental illnesses is invaluable and “4 Step Process To Mental Illness” is a powerful tool that every family must have.
