The Form I-9 may appear simple and straightforward, but there’s a myriad of rules and procedures which are often overlooked. These can lead to significant problems when ICE comes knocking at the door
Phoenix, AZ (Vocus/PRWEB) February 02, 2011
LawLogix Group, Inc., the leader in I-9 and E-Verify Compliance Software, announced today that it will host a free webinar covering the recently revised Form I-9 Handbook and its impact on employers, on Tuesday, February 15 at 11am EST. The one-hour webinar will feature a panel of I-9 experts, including special guest, Dan Brown, an immigration attorney with the renowned firm of Berry Appleman & Leiden and former Director of the Office of Policy and Planning at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Employers are encouraged to register early for this unique learning session, entitled “An In-Depth Look at the New Form I-9 Handbook”.
“The Form I-9 Handbook for Employers, also known as the M-274, is a must-read document for human resource professionals, hiring managers, and others who are tasked with ensuring proper completion of the Form I-9 employment eligibility verification form,” said attorney and guest panelist, Dan Brown. “The Form I-9 may appear simple and straightforward, but there’s a myriad of rules and procedures, memorialized in the Handbook, which are often overlooked. These errors and omissions can eventually lead to significant problems when ICE comes knocking at the door.”
Form I-9 compliance continues to be an extremely hot topic for employers in 2011, especially in light of a recent announcement from ICE that the agency plans to intensify worksite enforcement through a national Form I-9 auditing center which can handle the volumes of even the largest employers. The numbers have definitely been adding up - in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, 2010, ICE conducted audits of more than 2,740 companies, nearly twice as many as the previous year, and also levied a record $7 million in civil fines.
“As employers brace themselves for another year of increasing I-9 enforcement, it’s essential to develop a comprehensive and forward-thinking plan to tackle America’s most complicated one-page form,” said Dan Siciliano, who is co-founder of LawLogix and Director of Stanford’s Rock Center for Corporate Governance. “We hope this webinar will set employers on the path towards enlightenment with an in-depth analysis of the Handbook and unique insights into how electronic I-9 systems can address these frequently changing rules.”
The LawLogix webinar will include a discussion of the major changes in the M-274 Handbook, including new guidance on completing the I-9 for lawful permanent residents, student and exchange visitors, H-1B professionals, and other foreign national employees.
Attendees will also learn about the impact of these changes on electronic I-9 and E-Verify processing and hear about the latest tools which can facilitate employer compliance.
