Among the largest and most innovative public health care projects in California to improve the delivery of care while reducing costs, the California Comparative Analytics Project (CCAP) achieved a major milestone today, announced i2i Systems. Providing the analytics software and services for the CCAP, i2i Systems is a leader and pioneer in population health management.

In the span of two months, data representing 1.8 million patients from community health centers across the central and southern parts of the state have been brought together electronically for analysis. According to Jerry Lassa, Project Manager and Statistician, “The speed at which we’ve been able to go live with 13 Health Centers, drawing patient data from five electronic health record (EHR) vendors and four different Lab Systems is phenomenal. It takes a solid analytics infrastructure to achieve this level of data integration so quickly. We should hit the 2 million patient mark soon as we continue to add additional organizations.”

Through the application of leading information technology and comparative analytic tools, findings from the CCAP will help community health centers deliver better care, more efficiently at lower cost. This includes a focus on the success of chronic disease, wellness and preventive care management using clinical, financial and operational performance measures. Key areas under study include: diabetes, hypertension, obesity screening and intervention, tobacco use prevention and intervention, and cervical cancer screening.

“What makes this project significant,” explains Lassa, “is two-fold. One, its expansiveness: it reaches across the entire state of California, aggregating data from multiple, disparate electronic health records and lab systems, which by itself is a major accomplishment. Two, CCAP goes a step further by computing industry measures that can be benchmarked, and provide insight for making evidence-based change, helping our community health centers become the best.”

“i2i Systems has been providing analytical solutions to healthcare providers for over 12 years, and is encouraged by the CCAP’s current success," explains i2iSystems CEO and President Janice Nicholson. “Our PopIQ global intelligence solution provides a robust platform to handle the project’s growth and analytical demands. The CCAP seeks to identify exceptional performers and share their best practices across the state. When you can reduce variability of care you help elevate the quality of care for every adult, every child, and better manage costs.”

Speaking at the recent i2i Systems “Population Health is in Your Hands” Conference, Christy Rosenberg, Executive Director of the Community Clinics Health Network, said, “The Blue Shield of California – Comparative Analytics Program is a great opportunity to look at data from thousands of patients around a standard set of measures as a means to improve care. It’s an opportunity that we really haven’t had before.”
