Calgary, AB (PRWEB) July 18, 2007 -- iStockphoto, the world’s busiest image market announced today that it recently surpassed two million members. The two-millionth member was Brandon Elrod, from Foothill Ranch, California. Brandon, a certified arborist whose initial iStock purchase was of trees (naturally), will receive a prize package that includes 2,000 site credits. Other new members joining around the two millionth mark hailed from Australia, Canada, China, the Philippines, and Trinidad and Tobago.

iStockphoto pioneered the concept of micropayment stock imagery and was one of the first social networks in the world to actually pay contributors for the sale of their work. It remains the world leader in micropayment and is now the global volume leader in all stock photography sales, whether user-generated or traditional. An image or video is downloaded from the site every 2.5 seconds.

“I looked at other image sources for our tradeshow banner and found one that would have cost $740 more than the iStock image,” said Brandon Elrod, who is President of Pacific Coast Arborists. “I would have had to wait two days to get the other image as well, which did not fit in with our tight deadline. In the end we found a much better image and saved hundreds of dollars. I found iStock's site to be very user-friendly, and easy to collaborate with other third party design companies.”

iStockphoto is localized in twelve languages and has members on six continents. The virtual community has now grown bigger than the cities of Boston, Seattle and Austin, Texas combined, and has a population more than double that of San Francisco. It will also soon surpass the size of Slovenia, an Eastern European country from which one of its most successful contributors hails. It is currently one of the top 100 Web sites in the U.S. and is often in the top 300 worldwide according to Alexa.

“Each month iStock’s phenomenal growth just seems to fuel the creativity and expanded skills of our members,” said Bruce Livingstone, CEO of iStockphoto. “Sure, we were the first microstock, but we are the industry leader thanks to the commitment and energy of two million people exchanged in passionate debate, friendly business and the extended learning that we try to foster every day.”

About iStockphoto
iStockphoto, www.istockphoto.com, is the world’s busiest image market, with an image downloaded every 2.5 seconds. iStock pioneered the micropayment phenomenon in this industry, enabling buyers to license images for as little as a dollar. iStockphoto entered the stock video market in September of 2006, selling video for as low as $5 per 30 second clip. In partnership with its members, iStockphoto has turned community into commerce, transforming the digital imagery market by encouraging passionate dialogue and education, while making imagery affordable to businesses that may not have licensed imagery otherwise. iStockphoto is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Getty Images.
