Nick and Cedric have spent countless nights working on their designs and have exceeded our expectations. I think seeing their designs grace the runway in Miami will be a huge pay off not only for them but also for the fashion faculty who have supported them every step of the way.
Tampa, Fl (Vocus) October 5, 2007
Cedric Davis and Nick Rogers, current students at International Academy of Design and Technology (IADT) - Tampa, hope to score a hit when models take to the runway wearing their fashions at Mix N Mash. Both were collegiate athletes who decided to dramatically change course and follow their artistic passion. Davis and Rogers have teamed up to produce some new designs and have been paired with Brooklyn-born DJ Dummy. His innovative music (a mix of Hip-Hop, Rap and R&B) will provide the backdrop for the clothes created for nightlife or eccentric day wear. Mix N Mash is a battle of music and fashion featuring designers from top Florida-based art and design schools competing against each other in a runway show while simultaneously a DJ battle takes place at the Paris Theater, in Miami, on October 13th at 9pm.
Davis and Rogers are no rookies when it comes to competition. Davis played Division I football at Kent State University and Rogers was on a baseball scholarship at Radford University (in Virginia). They met as students at IADT - Tampa where both are now in the fashion design program.
The selection process began as an open call to the 330 fashion design students at IADT. 25 applied and then submitted preliminary sketches. The full-time faculty of the Fashion Design Department narrowed it down by taking into consideration skill, how far they were into the program and GPA. The team has gotten to meet with DJ Dummy and his wife twice in preparation for the show. DJ Dummy has been on the turntables for more than half of his life; spinning since 1984 and djing professionally for the past 16 years. During the first collaboration DJ Dummy asked for something that no one has ever seen before. He didn’t want traditional hip-hop style because he spins a variety of music. He wanted the clothes to fit a variety of people.
“Red Bull brought unique resources to the table with their relationships in fashion and music to create this great opportunity,” said Ashley Scollo, Department Manager Fashion Design, IADT - Tampa. “Nick and Cedric have spent countless nights working on their designs and have exceeded our expectations. I think seeing their designs grace the runway in Miami will be a huge pay off not only for them but also for the fashion faculty who have supported them every step of the way.”
IADT digital movie production student Jason Ellis has been filming Davis and Rogers through the entire process. The documentary will be debuted Tuesday, October 9th at 5pm at the Academy. Media is invited to attend the show and meet the students.
