Immaculate Conception Academy, an all-girls, Catholic, college preparatory, school in San Francisco, has lowered annual tuition to $2,900. At the Board of Directors’ meeting this month, they determined to make this change, decreasing tuition by $1,100. This change has made Immaculate Conception Academy the most affordable college preparatory high school in the Bay Area.

It has been Immaculate Conception Academy’s mission since its opening in 1883 to serve the young women of San Francisco, particularly “the young, the poor, and the vulnerable,” as the founder Mother Maria Pia Backes determined. In the spirit of Cristo Rey schools, ICA has been particularly focused on serving students from families of limited financial means. The decision to lower tuition was to promote this mission.

Additionally, the school makes clear that no student is denied because of an inability to pay. Several families have difficulty with tuition costs even at $2,900 a year. This is not a barrier for families at ICA because of extensive scholarship opportunities. 55% of students attending Immaculate Conception Academy receive some form of tuition support.

The Cristo Rey model makes lower tuition possible through a corporate work study program. Students at Immaculate Conception Academy work five business days a month at Bay Area corporate offices. Businesses can hire teams of students to fill entry level clerical positions. Income from these jobs subsidize a substantial portion of the cost of educating students along with giving them four years of professional work experience.

Regarding the program, ICA President, Sister Diane Aruda, O.P. stated, “ICA provides a rigorous academic program complemented by a Corporate Work Study experience which enhances learning and develops skills necessary for life. We are deeply grateful to our corporate sponsors who mentor our young women in the work place.”

Immaculate Conception Academy is one of twenty-four schools in the Cristo Rey Network nationwide. Immaculate Conception Academy is the only all-girls school in the network.
