A free-space optical communication system allows two-way information transfer between remotely located objects without wires and/or optical fibers, including applications in which many objects take part in the information exchange, e.g. in point-to-multipoint two-way information exchange between a base terminal and a plurality of subscriber terminals. Existing systems have many drawbacks which result in limited efficiency, reduced bandwidth, limited placement options, or sub-optimal construction options such as large, expensive detectors, the forcing of a combinatorial transmitter/receiver, or a multi-lens system with a primary lens > 200-300mm, which can potentially increase weight, size, and expense.

This portfolio provides a solution to these problems, as it discloses a free-space optical communication system with increased range, bit rate and reliability as well reduced the weight, size and cost, all without excess complexity. The portfolio includes inventive, high-efficiency beam-forming techniques, a beam shaping and generating device with increased uniformity, a cross-talk reducing optical repeater system, and a multibeam, utilizing a single wide-angle objective lens for all of the optical beams; radiation sources, which improve efficiency and reduces complexity. The commercial FSO market is expected to exceed $60 million by 2018(1).
