From our experience we know the things that people feel they have been ‘caught out’ on when they’ve changed vendors. Our tips are reminders of the things that people should do before they commit to a move.

Following Google’s announcement that they are transitioning the Postini services to Google Apps, alternative email security provider iCritical has released advice for any customers that are considering moving to an alternative vendor. The 5 tips detail actions that can be taken to ensure a successful switch. Managing Director at the cloud-based security provider, Chris Gee, explains why the company is offering this advice:
“This could be an unsettling time for Postini customers,” says Gee. “Although they’re not being forced to move, we expect an announcement like this will make some customers look at what else is out there.”
“We’re keen to help any Postini customers that are considering a move and believe offering our advice so they can make the right decision and prepare for a successful move is the most helpful thing we can do,” continues Gee. “From our experience we know the things that people feel they have been ‘caught out’ on when they’ve changed vendors. Our tips are reminders of the things that people should do before they commit to a move.”
Here are iCritical’s 5 Top Tips for Successful Switching:
1) Establish what you’re getting for your money
Ask your vendor to list exactly what you’ll get – from both a product and service point of view. Make sure that nothing you want is missing and that you’re getting your money’s worth.
2) Find out how long it will take to get you up and running
Make sure that you’ll be able to switch within a reasonable timescale and that you understand what you’ll need to do to make the switch happen.
3) Ask what you’ll have to do to migrate and what the vendor will do to assist you
Make sure you know exactly what is involved in the migration and what you will be responsible for. A vendor that prioritises customer service will make sure you’re completely comfortable with the product and service before considering the migration complete.
4) Clarify where your data will be stored and who will have access to it
Understanding exactly where your data is being stored is a must. If it’s outside the UK, non-UK laws will apply and you need to understand who might be able to access your data if it isn’t stored on UK soil.
5) Identify what you’ll need to do if you want to end your contract
Make sure you know what you’re signing up for and how you can out of it if you need to. Trustworthy vendors will be upfront about both their exit fees and notice period.
